AV Boot Camp puts sales teams through their paces

av-boot-camp-1-front-final-jan-2014Last week saw the first AV Boot Camp taking place at Sandhurst’s Military Academy, where sales teams from across the UK gathered for a full-on day of practical workshops to enhance knowledge and skills in the audio-visual industry. The free event, hosted by CUK Audio, Christie, Lightware Visual Engineering and Tack Training, allowed employees of all technical levels to experience the key areas of integration. Sales, audio, projection and signal management were covered by the technical experts that allowed the guests to get a hands-on approach to what they sell on a day to day basis.

The event also allowed companies to network and discover the latest technologies from the manufacturers involved and despite the small amount of time allocated, the boot camp was a great success full of useful information. Four of our staff attended and completed the boot camp, including Steve, Di, Lily and Jay and we would like to thank all involved in creating such a unique opportunity!

ISE 2014 preview

One of Europe’s largest electronics shows ISE will be returning to Amsterdam in February and we hope to be reporting from their to share all the latest news. We’ve been researching and have found a few top picks we feel will get a lot of attention of the three days at the RAI centre.

With a thin-bezel design on all 31 models of their speakers and subwoofers, Proficient Audio will be ones to listen out for at ISE. This new Protege series sees the largest product line change for the manufacturer and by eliminating the plastic rim these sleek speakers can blend better into walls and ceilings. Despite their minimalistic aesthetics, the acoustics and engineering behind the product are still the up to speed with rival products, making the Protégé series a real hit for interior designers and modern working environments.

4K Video Distribution from Crestron

4K is bound to continue being a buzzword you hear around 2014 but many in the business have been worrying about the lack of content available Crestron have tried to bridge the gap in the market with their latest DigitalMedia matrix switchers. Ranging from 8×8 to a gigantic 128×128 input/output, the switchers embody a new range of HDMI over HDBaseT extenders, which can transmit and receive 4K content using standard CAT5e cables. The HD-EXT4-C and HD-EXT3-C models can support 4K signals and send content up to 100 metres via the HDBaseT without any degradation of signal. The transmitters can be easily rack mounted or mounted in a single gang wall box.

AMX’s Enzo the latest in revolutionary meeting roomsamzenzo

Presenting and collaborating is an area many manufacturers are concentrating on due the fact a lot of research has returned problems with log in speed and sharing data. AMX’s ENZO series tackles this instantly – from logging in, to access documents, to sharing them. By using the cloud, you can access your documents via the cloud on popular application DropBox and instead of the faff of signing in, a QR code linked up to your mobile while allow you access. The QR code concept is also used for when your audience wish to access the documents so passwords aren’t needed but security is kept due to ENZO deleting all documents from the machine when you log off.

Vutec Theater Art System Multi-Vu

After winning awards at CES, and CEDIA, ISE displays Vutec’s all-in-one entertainment experience. What appears as a framed piece of art (or a personal photo if you wish) descends at the touch of a remote control to unveil a flat panel and a motorised projection screen. The projection screen offers several masking options and the system allows you to add multiple screens if you wish, making it ideal for a style-conscious environment.

New wearable technology to use tattoo as microphone

electronic-tattooIn May this year, we reported how researchers at the University of Carolina had created a Brain Machine Interface – a tattoo-like wireless device that attached to the forehead and could therefore allow for a computer to be controlled by the brain itself. Google have taken on a similar approach for their Google Glass, with a “neck tattoo” that contains a tiny wireless microphone that can be used for any mobile device. The hands-free concept will connect to the device via Bluetooth, Infrared or other short-range technology and there are talks that could also have a power supply that uses energy from the user’s body.

According to the patent that was filed on 7th November, the throat microphone should help reduce the amount of street noise many current mobile users deal with. Although throat microphones are currently used in military environments and were originally used in World War II, business analysts are unsure whether something as permanent as a tattoo would be attractive to a mass market. This Motorola device could take years to be approved but it’s interesting to see how mobile communications are planning to evolve.

Tablet popularity continues to grow in UK

According to a new report from eMarketer, a third of the British population now use a tablet at least once a month whether it’s their own, or shared by the family. It is predicted that by 2017 half of the population will be using a tablet regularly, due to a recent variety in prices. With the likes of Tesco’s small Hudl being far cheaper than current favourite iPad, it’s expected that Apple’s sales will drop in coming years.

The growing use of tablets in the education sector has had a real effect, with the under 12 audience rapidly growing and if these predictions are anything to go by, tablets will be a norm in every classroom. With this and the fact that several corporate companies are embracing the BYOD format, clients should be looking into future proofing their AV system. The majority of equipment on the market is now compatible with both Android and iOS devices and the applications are endless.

New touch screen technology thought to be more energy efficient

Touch screen experts Peratech have created a solution for touch screen applications that allows for a more energy efficient system. Due to the QTC Ultra Sensor being placed behind the screen, there is no loss of light from the display, meaning less battery is used.

This technology has been working best with OLED and e-paper type displays but can also be used on other products. LCD is not advised as they cannot really be pressed. Normally touch screen devices require a layer over the top of the display, which causes slight light loss, so having the technology behind the screen means brightness and quality in the image will not be lost.

QTC, which stands for Quantum Tunnelling Composite material, means the material changes its resistance when pressure is applied and only then. It means power is only used when the screen is touched, unlike previous technologies that need continual power for the active sensing matric. Apparently the QTC will also be a lot cheaper, due to limitless size opportunities regardless of the matrix interference and the company have already made examples that are 2m by 1m.

NEC Showcase 2013

IMAG0455As if the Tobacco Dock in London was not enough in respects of a great venue, the content displayed within its old fashioned frame makes for an enlightening day, in which the power of audio-visual proves it’s stronger than ever. The NEC Showcase’s fifth year of collaborating with other big manufacturers sees a serious upgrade in the retail and education sectors; however the event covers every angle including corporate, transport, media, leisure, healthcare and control. Each room had live demonstrations of new innovations so that you could experience the technology hands on, with visitors from round the world receiving live tours around the vast displays. From the word go you enter the electronic world, with a immersive tunnel that uses rear projection to create an engaging walkway.IMAG0456

Amongst all of this, there was also conferences and seminars as well as a dance troupe who were demonstrating a 4K workflow and were being filmed for playback on a 4K videowall and other 4K technology including a laser projector and using a 5K camera. 4K was seen elsewhere in the venue including NEC’s new 4K laser projector and a UHD 4K videowall. 3D had its own area, which proves this technology will continue to evolve, however it was kept purely for leisurely activities at this event.

The education room concentrated on collaborative learning including DisplayNote software, which we have touched on previously here. Digital signage within the schools and universities were pushed with AMX’s latest control panel proving anyone can keep the system up to date (blog coming soon).

The retail section was probably the most popular, due to so many interactive displays that brought to life many concepts we have been hearing so much about, yet haven’t tried out for ourselves. This included large touch screen menus, virtual changing rooms and audience analytics (blogs to come soon).

Controlling electronics without lifting a finger

tattoo (4)-580-90Just as tablets become the favourite for controlling lives, as well as technology, the University of Carolina come along to throw the largest spanner into the works, the human brain.  Researchers in the bioengineering department have created a “Brain Machine Interface” (BMI), which is a tattoo-like, wireless device attached to the forehead. At the moment, the contraption is being applied to the medical industry to monitor premature babies and research labs and hospitals are already planning the arrival of the BMI.

But think about it this way. Professor Coleman also sees potential applications in control and telepathy. Imagine, you walk into your house and the lighting, music and heating is set to your mood without you doing anything. The ease of application to the body and antennae to transmit the signals to other wireless receivers means the possibilities could be endless and many ridiculous. The BMI is solar powered and though we have already seen brain signals used to control robotics via implants, this tattoo form avoids complications with incorrect implantation (check out the video of Brain Gate implants in action below). So make the most of your thoughts now before everyone else can read them and let’s hope our AV systems will no longer need a finger lifted.

Google Glass development adds laser projector

googleglassbrin_large_verge_medium_landscapeWith what is probably the most anticipated gadget of the century, Google has added yet another feature to the technological attire that is likely to push it even further. A lightweight, monochrome laser projector has been mounted on one side of the glasses and a camera on the other, to create a projection that can be beamed onto any surface, including the user’s palm.

Its touch capabilities mean you can transform your hand or another surface, into a keyboard or controls for a game you’re playing on the Google device. With some similarities to the Microsoft Kinect game, the further developments to this technology mean  that despite head or hand movements, whilst say walking, the interface will stay centred, creating a smooth journey.

Mind controlled tablet starts to become a reality

mindcontrolThe futuristic possibilities we thought were only possible in the sci-fi movies are slowly but surely catching up with us. With touch, gesture and even eye control becoming a reality in recent times, Samsung, who created that Galaxy S4 phone which is controlled by eye movements, have proved that by concentrating, you can make selections on a tablet.

Users currently need to wear a cap with EEG-monitoring electrodes but the inventors are looking to create a dryer version soon. Many companies, including IBM have shown serious interest in this technology particularly for gauging moods. Although it may be a slower transaction from thought to display and far from general public use, this technology will be invaluable to those with mobility disabilities. Seeing as a lot of systems are now controlled by tablets, this technology could prove to be life changing for those needing AV equipment.

 

Training day at RGB shines more light onto projection

RGB-red-splashWith the projection industry continuing to shine brighter after a continual advance in technology, our team visited RGB Communications to keep up to date with the latest products. Drew Rogers, a product specialist for projection, helped breakdown the pros and cons of each technology including DLP, 3 chip DLP and LED as well as the more upmarket LCoS systems. With products from NEC, Barco and Canon, some of our staff were shown demonstrations on the increases in resolution and quality available from each projector.

However, RGB do not just supply projectors. Covering an array of equipment including mounts, VC systems and control systems, their latest product that caught our eye was the Savant control system. Using an Apple device, this home automation system could also be used in a corporate environment, and with everyone owning an iPad, Savant is bound to become a favourite, as it has already proven popular in hotels.
